It’s almost like trying to find the best college to go to or better yet, like trying to find the perfect mate. Finding the best 55+ community in Georgia is right up there with most exciting new challenges in life. And, as with most significant lifetime decisions, it may take some time and a little effort — but when you know you’ve found the right one, you just know.
Choosing the right active adult community doesn’t have to be difficult though. All you have to do is look for indications that resonate with you. Consider the following:
Like the location
One of the most critical aspects to consider when moving to a new place is, of course, location. It ties directly to other factors, such as a favorable climate; varied landscape; easy access to dining, shopping, banks, pharmacies, medical facilities, and other places that are important to you. Remember, you don’t want to be shoveling snow in the winter and you’ll probably want to have a good airport nearby to make travel easier in your retirement years.
Determine if age-restricted or age-targeted
There’s a difference between the two. If you desire to live in a genuinely 55+ community, then aim for one that is age-restricted (like ours.) Age-restricted neighborhoods are often quieter. On the contrary, an age-targeted community means that your amenities (like the pools, for example) could be available to residents of all ages.
Are the people pleasant?
Consider not only the friendliness of the residents but the people who are employed by the community. Do you find everyone to be outgoing and kind? Do they wave to you when you drive past? Are you greeted with a smile from all that you meet, even the security guards at the gate? Do you see residents actively utilizing the amenities, like the workout equipment at the gym, the pool, or simply walking their dogs in the neighborhood? When you visit, take note of just how friendly, helpful, and “active” your future neighbors may be
Make aging-in-place effortless
Look for beautiful, low-maintenance, ranch-style homes specifically built for aging-in-place. Also, most people would prefer to avoid mowing the lawn and trimming the hedges in their golden years, so make yard maintenance a priority. And speaking of landscaping, it’s always nice to come home to a beautifully landscaped community. A place where seasonal flowers are always in bloom (even pansies in the winter months!) “Pride-in-place” should be an essential factor in your decision.
