Most people have heard of Atlanta, Georgia, but many are unfamiliar with our hometown of Canton, Georgia. Even though it’s a growing suburb on the northwest side of Atlanta, it’s certainly not as famous as our capital city. Of course, there are lots of exciting things to do in and around the vibrant city of Atlanta, but what about a bit farther out in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains? If you into any mountain biking, hiking, or cross-country running, this is the trail system for you. Ranging from beginner to expert, there are several trails to choose from, many of which cross Blanket’s Creek and skirt the shores of Lake Allatoona. Note that trail etiquette stipulates that hikers walk in the opposite direction of bikers. Either way, the views are excellent. You’ll find that the woods are exceptionally pretty in the fall.
Ok, stick with us here. A cemetery may not initially be high on your list of fun things to do, but the Georgia National Cemetery is different. Believe it or not, it’s TripAdvisor’s number one thing to do in Canton! When you go, you’ll learn why — it’s as stunning as it is beautiful. Not only are the grounds well maintained, but the mountain views are also breathtaking. Visit around Memorial Day when every stone has an American flag placed in front of it. Christmas-time is just as heartwarming, as every stone has a wreath put on it. No matter when you go, you’ll find it to be a peaceful place that will fill you with honor and pride.
Located a short drive from Soleil Laurel Canyon, in Ball Ground, Georgia is this treasure. Gibbs Gardens is one of our nation’s largest residential estate gardens. It’s filled will a variety of plants, flowers, and trees, many of which flower during different parts of the year. The stunning landscape also includes 24 ponds, 32 bridge crossings, and 19 waterfalls. The property is a treat for the eyes. Try to visit between March 1 and April 15, when you’ll see over 20 million daffodil bulbs in bloom.
Built in 1911 as a silent movie theater, this restored Art Deco building offers a variety of interesting productions throughout the year. You’ll find current entertainment options on the theater’s calendar of events, including locally produced plays, musicals, concerts, as well as special film screenings. You can easily make a night of it by grabbing a great dinner and a show, all in the charming downtown area of Canton.
Located just a short, 30-minute drive away in Alpharetta, Georgia is Chukkar Farm Polo Club. There, the public is welcome to watch live polo matches on Sundays from April through October. The cost is $20 per carload of people, and the events start at 2 pm. Pack a picnic lunch, beverages of your choice, and your lawn chairs, and you’ll have everything you need to watch this unique “Sport of Kings.” It’s a fun and memorable way to spend an afternoon with friends and family.
